Losing a legal case can be a devastating thing. While a decision by a judge or jury may seem final, it is not the end of the road. Before giving up, you need to ask yourself, “what is an appeal?” and consider whether you have a reason to appeal the decision rendered by the judge or jury.
At the simplest level, an appeal is simply a request that a legal judgment be changed. When you go to court as a plaintiff or a defendant, the judge or jury will render a binding legal decision. You must either comply with the terms of that decision or appeal the decision. If you appeal, you are submitting a formal legal motion that requests the court to reconsider the binding verdict.
